Frequently Asked Questions

I've never seen anything like this, how is your paper jewelry made?

Each piece is handmade using the ancient technique of quilling. Quilling is the art of curling and shaping paper. The origin is unknown, however, it has been said to have roots in Ancient Egypt and/or beginning with the invention of paper in China 105 AD. Each bead is individually sculpted and hardened using our curing process. Our beads are designed into uniquely beautiful shapes and configurations and adhered in place through a multi-stage curing process. Each piece is meticulously created during a 3-5 day manufacturing process offering the most resilient paper jewelry in the final piece. Finally, each pair is adorned with various metals and earwires to make an inspired work of art.

How are they cured?

We have done extensive research since beginning this work to find and develop the right glues and bonding methods for our paper jewelry. Our process penetrates the fibers of the paper transforming them into a hardened state, almost like a wood, but preserving the lightweight properties of the paper.  Bringing our background in printmaking and industry paper knowledge, we have struck a balance between keeping the natural textures of the paper visible, while creating a water resistant art piece. We prioritize integrity of paper craft, with production methods using acid free and specialty paper manufactured with fade-resistant dyes. Depending on frequency of wear and care, your piece will last for years to come and be a favorite in your everyday or momentous occassion.

Can I wear my art piece in the rain?

Yes, you may wear your piece outside in inclement weather, however, it is not recommended to shower, bathe or swim with your piece. Do not submerge your piece in water. Our studio is based in Portland, Oregon where we have strenuously tested our art pieces in rainy, windy and misty conditions. We are proud to offer rain approved paper jewelry. Lay your piece flat and allow to dry in the event of accidental soaking.

How do I care for my wearable art?

Each piece is a sculptural wearable art piece and while we integrate a considered making process to create a resilient paper piece, the material remains unappologetically paper. Please treat your art with respect as you wear your one-of-a-kind piece. Helpful tips include: avoid tossing your piece in bags, purses or drawers, avoid saturating it with water, like showering or swimming, and avoid forceful actions like crushing, squeezing, or pulling on your art. Like any treasured jewelry you may have in your collection, we recommend safely storing your pieces when not in use. We like the jewelry stands that allow you to hang your pieces while keeping them, upright, handy and visible.
